Mathematics Tutor

Mathematics tuition for students from Key Stage 3 through to A-level and IB, with a focus on deep mathematical understanding and problem-solving.

I am a private mathematics tutor with a background in mathematics and mathematics education. I have taught at leading UK independent schools, including Winchester College, Latymer Upper School and Godolphin and Latymer School, and have experience working with students from Key Stage 3 through to iGCSE, A-level and IB.

I am proud to have tutored children who gained places at highly selective schools such as Eton, Winchester College, St Paul’s Girls’ School and Latymer Upper School. My older students regularly achieve top grades at public examinations such as the GCSE, A-Levels and IB, and many have continued their education at leading universities, including Cambridge, Oxford and universities in the Ivy League.

My approach centres on developing a deep understanding of the underlying mathematical ideas, alongside the problem-solving skills needed to apply them confidently to unfamiliar problems. In addition to excelling in school and on exams, I aim to help students develop an appreciation of mathematics and a love for challenging problems.

About me

Education

I studied for my bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at Christ’s College, University of Cambridge. Following this, I completed my teaching qualification (PGCE) and my master’s degree in Mathematics Education at King’s College London.

Teaching Experience

I have taught at several leading UK independent schools, including Winchester College, Latymer Upper School, and the Godolphin and Latymer School. During this time, I gained classroom experience across the full range of the UK Mathematics syllabus, from Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) through to IGCSE, A-level and Further Mathematics.
I also have experience teaching within the International Baccalaureate (IB), including Higher Level Mathematics in the Diploma Programme.

For the past few years, I have been working as a mathematics tutor. I have prepared students for UK entrance examinations at both 11+ and 13+, as well as scholarship examinations, including the King’s Scholarship at Eton College. I have also helped students achieve top grades in GCSE, A-level and IB examinations.
I particularly enjoy helping talented students preparing for mathematics competitions and university entry. I have experience preparing students for the SAT, TMUA and STEP.

Mathematical Enrichment

I have been volunteering for the UK Maths Trust (UKMT) since 2016, working in a variety of roles. This has included mentoring talented students, giving talks in maths circles, and contributing to the setting and marking of the British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO).

Tutoring

I work with students at all stages of secondary and sixth-form mathematics, tailoring tuition to their individual goals. This may involve strengthening understanding of the school curriculum, preparing for examinations, or exploring mathematics beyond the standard syllabus.

I particularly value working with students and families over a longer period of time, as I believe it takes time and sustained effort to develop a thorough understanding of underlying mathematical ideas. Where my availability allows, I can also offer more intense short-term preparation, for example in the period leading up to public examinations.

I offer tuition in the following areas:

School Mathematics

iGCSE · FSMQ · A-level · Further Mathematics · IB

One-to-one tuition supporting students throughout the school curriculum, from strengthening foundations and filling gaps to working towards the highest grades.

School Entrance & Scholarships

11+ · 13+ · Academic Scholarships

Preparation for competitive school entrance examinations and scholarship assessments, including examinations such as the King's Scholarship at Eton College,

University Admissions

ESAT · TMUA · STEP · SAT

Preparation for mathematics-focused university admissions tests and the mathematical problem-solving required for competitive university applications.

Competitions & Enrichment

Olympiads · Advanced Problem-Solving

For students who want to explore mathematics beyond the standard curriculum, including preparation for UKMT competitions, such as the Maths Challenge or the British Mathematical Olympiad.

Online tuition

All lessons are taught online using Zoom and various mathematical software and digital whiteboards. Over several years of online teaching, I have developed a range of tools and techniques that make lessons highly interactive and allow us to work through mathematical ideas and problems naturally, much as we would in person.

Online tuition also makes it easy to share resources and keep a clear record of work between lessons.

Working with parents

I believe parents should have a clear understanding of their child's progress. I communicate openly about strengths and areas that need improvement. If a student is behind, or if a particular target will require significant additional work, I will say so honestly.

My aim is to work collaboratively with both students and parents, while helping students take increasing responsibility for their own learning.
